Chris Brunner's list of podcasts that he says don't suck.

I listen to a few of them already - PaulDotCom, Sploitcast, and Martin McKeay's Network Security podcast. If I ever get time, I'll listen to a few more of them. I wasn't terribly impressed with Gibson's podcast, although I have fond memories of Spinrite.

getmail vs procmail

I very recently switched to using getmail rather than fetchmail to get email from a POP3 account. I use procmail as the local MDA so I can call SpamAssassin.

It kept thinking there was an error in the mail delivery and exiting without deleting the mail, even though it got delivered.

Turns out one *really* ought to set LOGFILE at the top of one's .procmailrc, since getmail sees some stderr output from procmail and assumes an error, even if the exit code is 0.

I got the hint from this thread. Seems to me this perhaps ought to be in the FAQ for getmail, so I'll see about submitting it. Granted, it's a user error in configuring procmail, but still.

On reporting in hockey

No Tyler, that's why hockey players and teams suck.

A reporter who wrote a no holds barred account of a hockey team would never write a story about that team again. Especially the 80s Oilers. I can't blame them for liking their careers more than some fictional standard of "journalistic integrity".

If it happens, it's going to be the same as Ball Four - an ex-player.

It sure isn't going to be Gretzky or Messier that does it though, nor likely anybody else that played in the HC game.

Fans are stupid

"Fan voting is a dumb way to do it," said Flames defenceman Andrew Ference yesterday on picking starters. "The All-Star Game is about having the best players showcased. The people who know that best are the people involved in the business. . . . Really, it can be so skewed with fan voting, it's silly. The last people who should have the final word are hometown fans."

I'm guessing there's not going to be any "Vote For Andy" campaigns any time soon.

Hey Andrew: should have gotten it written into the CBA, along with everything else.

The NHL asked who fans wanted to see, well, it's finding out. And if players like Ference or sportswriters like Jim Matheson disagree with that, here's a nice big cup of shut the hell up, because it's just too bad. Hockey Hall of Fame credentials or not, Matheson came off as an idiot.

The more I think about it, the more I agree that the All Star Game is just stupid anyway. You may be seeing hockey's "best" players (read: flashiest, with the occasional old guy thrown in because he's not made many before) but you're certainly not seeing hockey at its best. We see that in the spring or, dare I say it, at the Olympics. What we see at the All Star Game is a bunch of players smoking and joking. Good for them, and yeah, pretty goals - but even Owen Nolan picking his spot in San Jose doesn't beat Rob Schremp in a shootout during pre-season.

Ference is correct, but his solution isn't.
